Commedia and the Actor - Spontaneity From Metaphysical Mask to Melodrama

Master class – "Commedia and the Actor", By Ole Brekke, Founder of The Commedia School in Copenhagen. This class will be an active insight into the pedagogy of Carlo Mazzone-Clementi who was together with Ole during 15 years at The Commedia School. This class will focus on spontaneity and the preparation of the actor through the exercises we call “the showers.” The participants will be introduced to the metaphysical mask, the training mask invented by Carlo and developed further at The Commedia School. From this basis we will explore melodrama as a style especially well-suited to take on today’s critical environmental issues.

The Commedia School in Copenhagen is a physical theater school. The basis of the training is movement, the physical aspect of acting, which is often neglected in traditional acting programs. The course is grounded in the pedagogical methods of Carlo Mazzone-Clementi, Jacques Lecoq, and Moshe Feldenkrais. Because each class has students from many countries, the English language is used.

The school has started students on successful careers in many areas of performing – including stage, street theater, circus, puppet theater, magic, children’s theater, performance, cabaret and film. Performers educated at The Commedia School are today found at the top of their performing professions globally.
